Cinemas across the UK are set to open their doors from today, as the journey out of lockdown enters another landmark phase. For the first time in almost 5 months, operators across the country have the green light to welcome audiences back to their venues, with more than 80% of sites due to reopen over the coming weeks.
Recent survey findings from cross-industry body Cinema First revealed that cinema is the most missed out-of-home entertainment activity, with 72% of participants stating that they plan to visit venues in the coming months. Teens, parents and under 35s are the most enthusiastic to return, with more than half of respondents affirming that the unique cinema experience could not be effectively replicated at home.
With the successful ongoing roll out of COVID-19 vaccines now reaching much of the UK population, and new case numbers currently at their lowest levels since August 2020, consumer confidence looks to be on the rise. A gradual return to normalcy is underway, as the retail and hospitality sectors open up and are now joined by arts, leisure and cultural venues.
Cinema is in a strong position to capitalise on the pent-up demand for much needed out of home entertainment, presented in a proven safe and welcoming environment. Cinemagoers will be the first to enjoy the thrill of the big screen since sites throughout the nation shuttered in late 2020, in line with government lockdown restrictions.
A feast of cinematic delights awaits returning audiences, including high profile marquee releases, recent award winners and family favourites amongst others, all aimed at reigniting the country’s passion for cinema.
