Comscore announced £322m as the final 2020 box office total for the UK and Ireland in their 2020 UK & Ireland Box Office Review.
Following five consecutive years when theatrical returns exceeded £1.3bn, widespread lockdowns and subsequent cinema closures resulted in a 76% drop in revenues from 2019.
After an initial boom period in early Q1 where box office was running 20% ahead of the previous bumper year, cinemagoing did not fully recover to the same levels after March.
1917 (£44m) was comfortably the year’s no.1 release in cinemas, with Sonic the Hedgehog (£19.3m) and Tenet (£17.4m) rounding out the top 3.
eOne was the leading distributor, taking £49.3m (15.3% of the total market), which was the first time an indie distributor has claimed the territory crown.
